List of Barrios in Zamboanga City

A barangay (Filipino: baranggay, pronounced [baraŋˈɡaj]), also known by its former Spanish adopted name, the barrio, is the smallest administrative division in the Philippines and is the native Filipino term for a village, district or ward. Barangays are further subdivided into smaller areas called Puroks (English: Zone).[1]

The former lone Legislative district of Zamboanga City is the representation of the City of Zamboanga in the Philippine House of Representatives. Zamboanga City was part of the representation of the Zamboanga Province from 1935 to 1953, of Zamboanga del Sur from 1953 to 1972 and of Region IX from 1978 to 1984. It was granted its own representation in 1984 by the Batasang Pambansa.

The legislative district of Zamboanga City was divided into two districts from 2007 elections in accordance with article VI, section V, part (3) of the Constitution and Republic Act No. 9269 as approved by the 12th Congress of the Philippines and signed into law by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on March 19, 2004.

Profiles of Key Barrios

Ayala

The barangay of Ayala, located at the western portion of Zamboanga, houses major canning factories. The sardine industry in this barrio makes Zamboanga the sardines capital of the Philippines. Our Lady of Mount Carmel is the barrio's parish patroness celebrated every 16 July.

Tetuan

Tetuan, located near the Zamboanga City central area, is the second most populous barangay, and belongs to the city's Second (East) Congressional District. It was an old municipality in the early 1910s before being merged as part of the chartered city in 1936. The church of Saint Ignatius de Loyola, the Coca-Cola Plant, the Pastor Bonus Seminary, Alavar's Restaurant, UZ Summit Center and the Zamboanga City Colliseum are located in Tetuan. The barangay is also home to educational institutions such as the Universidad de Zamboanga Main Campus and the Immaculate Conception Archdiocesan School. It was also home of the largest mall in the city, Alta Mall, which was turned to a barter trade center and later closed in 1996.

Tumaga

Tumaga is situated at the Tumaga River, It houses the high school campus of Ateneo de Zamboanga University (ADZU). The Villa San Ignacio, a housing project by Filinvest, is located beside ADZU high school campus. Landco's Woodridge Village and Forest Lake Theme Park are also located here. it is part of the city's first (west) congressional district.

Santa Maria

Santa Maria was established by Jesuits as a missionary site in 1935. The barrio houses the Edwin Andrews Air Base of the AFP, the area of the Zamboanga City Airport (shared with Canelar Moret and San Roque)and the Santa Maria Church.

Pasonanca

Located north of the city proper, Pasonanca became home of important natural and man-made landmarks such as the Scout Limbaga, the Zamboanga City Convention Center, and the Pasonanca Park. The barrio is also accessible to Mt. Pulumbato in Abong-abong. Several restaurants serving fine dining are also located in Pasonanca such as Park 88 and Antonio's Steak House.

Bolong

Bolong is known for brown sand beaches. It is located farther east of the city proper.
